Can Shower Screens Explode?

Here’s the Quick Answer

No. Shower screens don’t “explode” like a bomb. Modern screens are made from Grade A toughened safety glass designed to crumble into small pellets if it fails, reducing the risk of serious injury. Spontaneous shattering is rare, and the risk can be minimised with the right glass, correct installation, and good maintenance.

Why Can Toughened Glass Suddenly Shatter?

Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated to be much stronger than ordinary glass. In very rare cases it can fail without obvious impact due to:

    • Nickel sulphide inclusions are microscopic particles that can expand over time inside the glass.

    • Edge damage or chips, often from accidental knocks during use or cleaning.

    • Binding or misalignment in hinges or frames that puts the pane under constant stress.

    • Thermal stress from sudden temperature differences.

Some premium projects specify heat-soak testing, a process that purposely “bakes” tempered glass to weed out panes with critical inclusions before installation. It doesn’t guarantee zero failures but reduces the risk significantly.

What Do Australian Standards Require?

In Australia, shower screens must comply with AS 1288 (selection and installation) and AS/NZS 2208 (safety glazing). At Ezy Glide, typical glass thicknesses are 10 mm (or 8 mm in select cases) for frameless, 6–8 mm for semi-frameless, and 6 mm for fully framed systems, all installed to the relevant Australian Standards.

How Common Is It?

Spontaneous breakage is uncommon. Industry experience links most rare “out-of-the-blue” failures to nickel sulphide inclusions, with heat-soak testing used to lower that risk further. While exact rates vary by supplier and product, failures are rare events, especially when glass is compliant and correctly installed.

How to Minimise the Risk at Home

    • Choose compliant glass and hardware. Ask for evidence of AS 1288 and AS/NZS 2208 compliance for the screen and fittings.

    • Consider heat-soak tested glass for frameless or high-use applications.

    • Install correctly. Proper clearances and alignment prevent edge binding and stress. Use qualified installers.

    • Treat glass with care. Don’t slam doors or hang heavy items from the glass. Avoid hard knocks with metal objects. Inspect edges and corners for chips.

    • Maintain seals and hardware. Worn seals or sagging hinges can create stress points that lead to failure.

If Your Shower Screen Shatters

    1. Stay calm and step back. Safety glass will pelletise, but there may be sharp fragments.

    2. Wear enclosed shoes and gloves before cleanup.

    3. Carefully collect larger pieces and vacuum the area for small fragments.

    4. Avoid using the shower if the glass is cracked or a panel is compromised.

    5. Contact your installer to assess and replace the panel, and to check hinges, channels and clearances.

FAQs

Does “explode” mean dangerous flying shards?
Not usually. Safety glass crumbles into small pellets designed to reduce the chance of severe injury compared with ordinary glass.

Is laminated glass safer than toughened glass?
They’re different. Toughened glass is the typical safety choice for showers because it meets impact requirements and is allowed by code. Toughened-laminated can add post-breakage hold, but suitability depends on design and hardware. Always follow AS 1288 and your installer’s advice.

Have there been recalls?
Occasionally, products are recalled if they don’t meet safety-glass requirements, another reason to buy from reputable brands and installers.
